Resizing Images for Digital Projection

Size recommended: 1024 pixels per inch (ppi) x 768 ppi x 150 resolution

The following instructions refer to Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. They can be adapted to other types of software.

Open the image.

Select zoom

  • Right click on image and select “fit to screen”

  • Right click again and select “zoom out”

You will now have a decent sized image plus a bit of spare space surrounding it.

The actual sizing is best done with the crop tool.

Select crop tool.

  • Use the settings bar above the picture area and fill in the appropriate boxes with the sizing information given above.

  • These settings can then be saved as a tool preset which will save time on your next project. (Press the drop down menu next to the crop tool symbol, then select the fly-out arrow and then click on “New tool preset”.

You are now ready to do the cropping.

Check that the background colour is set to black (look at the two little squares on the tool-bar).

Drag the crop tool across the image.

  • It will snap to the picture edge and will stop when it gets to the proportions you have specified.

  • This might not coincide with the boundaries of the picture. Click on one of the corner boxes and drag the crop boundary to where you want it. The crop box will continue to maintain its set proportions – which is what we want.

  • Adjust the crop lines to get the picture in the middle. To do this simply hold down the left mouse button in the middle of the box and drag it around.

  • Click to complete the crop.

  • Any area outside the picture will turn black. This will give a crisper presentation in the projected image.

Sometimes you may decide to use another colour instead of black – perhaps to complement to colours in the picture. All you need to do is ensure that the background colour is the one you want.

Save as a medium resolution j-peg.
